摘要:
In this paper we have estimated new empirical models of housework for husbands and wives that utilize, combine, and, in some cases, expand upon the individual ideas of previous housework studies. Our models also incorporate new enhancements to address concerns that have recently arisen in the litera- ture. In doing so, we have estimated equations with promising statistical re- sults.5 Though the percentage of total variation in household labor that is ex- plained is small, research in the area is increasingly robust. Consequently, the level of household labor in terms of hours performed is predictable using econometric methods (compared to simple tables) for forensic purposes when case-specific housework data is unavailable or limited. Although our models address concerns regarding the quadratic nature of life experience variables for both husbands and wives, the most compelling re- sult may be the confirmed presence of statistically significant cross-spousal respondent bias in the reporting of husbands housework labor hours (as well as the lack thereof for wives) in the PSID data set. In light of this finding, im- portant questions arise. First, to what can this difference in husband s reported housework hours be attributed Second, how should practitioners treat the significance of this finding When estimating annual housework hours per- formed by the husband, should they assume the husband-respondents are cor- rect (i.e., Wf_Respond = 0) or the wife-respondents are correct (i.e., Wf_Respond = 1) In order to remain conservative and facilitate forensic use of PSID data, we have assumed that this finding implies husbands tend to exaggerate their housework by approximately 124 hours per year (or about two hours and twenty-three minutes per week). However, this assumption may not be neces- sarily correct. There are alternative explanations for the difference between the amounts of housework that wives report that their husbands do vs. the amount of housework hours that
